Did you know that Mardi Gras originated hundreds of years ago in Venice, Italy? This celebration is an offshoot from the Carnival of Venice which is still celebrated in current times every year. At this festival they wear venetian masquerade masks and very elaborate costumes. The common color is purple but many other colors are used as well, suffice it to say it is a very colorful and beautiful event. The outfits are typically made with layers of fabric and lace, just the way they were created in the old days but more colorful. These carnivals are actually held all over the world but in slightly different ways. It is crazy to think that there is such a huge difference between Mardi Gras and the Carnival of Venice.
