Travel agents, despite the popular image most people hold over the somewhat lazy/somewhat sleazy telemarketer – are actually hard working folks who provide a very valuable service. First and foremost, these individuals must be both talented and adept at dealing with people of all stripes and walks of life. For example, one moment they might have to be rubbing elbows with big shots from hotel chains or international airlines in efforts to obtain package rates or discounted fares. The next minute, the same agent might have to help an elderly couple plan their 50th anniversary “honeymoon” trip or perhaps offer some students last minute Asia travel tips before they head off on a semester abroad. Of course, this difficult job is not without its perks and many travel agents bring in a decent salary – some making six figures every year! Also, travel agents also fly and vacation for free and, knowing so many people throughout the service industry, they also tend to enjoy special perks and privileges when dining out or attending shows and events as well.
