I visited Hampton Beach NH today, just on a day trip from Boston, and had a blast. It was a nice warm day and you would have thought it was the middle of the summer. The beach wasn’t as full as you might expect to see it next month but there were still a lot of people there for this time in May.
One of the things I saw in walking along Ocean Boulevard was a little shop that featured Stella. She did handwriting analysis, tarot card readings and spiritual readings. At least that is what it said on her signs.
Seeing this got me thinking. Why are there always fortune tellers at beach destination places like Hampton Beach? I have seen this same type of thing at other beaches in the northeast. Places like Asbury Park and Coney Island. I guess part of it is because they can make money in such places but it still just struck me as really odd. They are like the last remaining act of an old time traveling fair. All the freak show and such are gone, but somehow all the fortune tellers made their way to the beaches.
